Paragliding is the most popular aerial sport activity available from the beautiful city of Pokhara, Nepal. Moreover, the valley has stable thermals for easy take-off with plentiful safe landing sites. It thus makes Pokhara a very suitable spot for tandem paragliding.
Paragliding is the recreational adventure sport of flying paragliders. Additionally, it is a lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircraft with no rigid primary structure. Moreover, the pilot sits in a harness or lies supine in a cocoon-like ‘pod’ suspended below a fabric wing. Despite not using an engine, the paraglider flight in Pokhara can last anywhere from 20-30 minutes. However, it requires a skillful exploitation of lift. During your flight you can sit carefree and enjoy the view, take pictures and even chat with the pilot.
The paraglider wing or canopy is usually what is known in engineering as a ram-air airfoil. Such wings comprise two layers of fabric that are connected to internal supporting material in such a way as to form a row of cells. By leaving most of the cells open only at the leading edge, incoming air keeps the wing inflated, thus maintaining its shape. When inflated, the wing’s cross-section has the typical teardrop aerofoil shape. Modern paraglider wings are made of high-performance non-porous materials such as ripstop nylon.
Pokhara, the capital of Gandaki Province is located some 200 kilometers (120 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu. Moreover, the city is on the shore of Phewa Lake and sits at an elevation of 830 m / 2723 ft above sea level. In recent decades, Pokhara has become a major tourist destination. Furthermore, it is also considered the tourism capital of Nepal as it provides a base for the famous Annapurna Circuit Trek.
The activity begins with a pick up from your hotel in Pokhara. You will then drive towards the take off place at Mandre Dhunga (1788 m). The flight will then take off for a spectacular birds eye view of the beautiful Phewa Lake, Hemja valley, and the city of Pokhara itself. Additionally, the visitors here can also enjoy the magnificent Himalayas including Annapurna I-IV in the backdrop. During your flight you will share the airspace with Himalayan griffins, vultures, eagles while gliding over the villages, monasteries, temples, lakes and forests.
