Legendary Landmarks and Highlights

The Deep Valley: Modi Khola and Bamboo Forests

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek – 5 Days begins with a shared jeep drive to the Simrung trailhead, effectively bypassing lower-altitude heat and dust. From this point, the trail descends toward the turquoise Modi Khola River, where you enter a world of towering cliffs and dense bamboo forests. This initial stretch serves as a lush, temperate introduction before the landscape shifts into high alpine terrain. Furthermore, you will cross high suspension bridges that offer spectacular first glimpses of white peaks towering above the vibrant green valley.

Cultural Gateway: Hinku Cave and Deurali

As the trail climbs toward Deurali, the valley gradually narrows into a dramatic gorge. Along the way, you will pass the famous Hinku Cave, a massive rock overhang once used as shelter by early expeditions. This section highlights the raw power of the Himalayas, surrounded by cascading waterfalls and steep rock walls. Consequently, upon reaching Deurali at 3,200 m, you are perfectly positioned for the final push, as the air turns crisp and the alpine vegetation thins.

The Sacred Guardian: Machhapuchhre Base Camp

Before reaching the main camp, you arrive at Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) at 3,700 m. This “Fishtail” peak is sacred to local culture and remains unclimbed, standing as a silent guardian over the sanctuary entrance. Standing here, you are rewarded with an intimate, up-close view of its unique double-summit. In addition to its spiritual significance, this stop offers a dramatic 360-degree perspective of the surrounding Annapurna massif, providing an ideal moment for a rest and photography.

The Natural Amphitheater: Annapurna Base Camp

The ultimate goal is reaching Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 m. Unlike other treks, ABC is a natural amphitheater that completely surrounds you with a ring of ten peaks over 6,000 m, including the massive south face of Annapurna I. Most importantly, witnessing the sunrise here is a profound experience as the first light turns white glaciers into glowing gold. Our 5-day itinerary ensures you reach this legendary milestone through expert pacing and the professional care of the Cordial Trek team.

Life on the Trail

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek – 5 Days Timeline

The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek – 5 Days follows a precise schedule designed for maximum efficiency and spectacular scenery. Your adventure begins on Day 1 with a shared jeep journey from Pokhara to the Simrung trailhead, followed by a trek into the Modi Khola valley. Consequently, the path leads through dense bamboo forests and rugged alpine terrain to reach the 4,130 m Annapurna Base Camp by Day 3. On Day 4, after witnessing a legendary golden sunrise, you will begin your descent to Upper Sinuwa for a comfortable overnight stay. Finally, a trek to the therapeutic Jhinu Danda hot springs and a transfer back to Pokhara on Day 5 marks the successful conclusion of your journey.

Please note: For travelers seeking a completely hassle-free experience, we can design an all-inclusive itinerary upon request. This custom plan can include a private airport greeting at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and standard/premium hotel accommodations. Furthermore, we can arrange professionally guided city tours in either Kathmandu or Pokhara to explore Nepal’s rich cultural heritage. Ultimately, these personalized services are available as a bespoke upgrade, allowing us to handle the complexities of the city while you focus on the trail.

Daily Flow and Pace

Your trekking days typically begin at 07:00 AM to take full advantage of the crisp morning air and the clearest mountain views. Every morning and evening, your lead guide provides comprehensive briefings on the specific terrain and safety protocols for the journey ahead. Furthermore, he or she will maintain a steady, sustainable pace that prioritizes natural acclimatization over speed. Consequently, this routine allows you to navigate the famous ascents toward the sanctuary safely and confidently. We manage the technical rhythms of the high-altitude environment so you can focus entirely on the surrounding landscape. In short, our expert pacing ensures you reach 4,130 m feeling energized and ready for the spectacular views.

Your Mountain Home: Teahouse Accommodation

Throughout the trek, you will stay in hand-picked, family-run teahouses offering a warm Himalayan welcome. Rooms are generally twin-sharing and feature comfortable beds with thick blankets. Furthermore, these lodges provide a cozy communal atmosphere in the dining areas where you can relax after the day’s trek. Please note that to prevent deforestation, ACAP bans wood-burning stoves; however, kerosene heaters are often available in the dining areas at an additional cost. To ensure you stay perfectly warm at higher altitudes, we provide high-quality sleeping bags rated to -15°C for every guest. Consequently, these authentic stays allow you to experience local hospitality while resting comfortably for the journey ahead.

Expert Tip: For those trekking in the peak of winter or facing colder nights, we recommend wearing your down jacket and thermal layers inside your sleeping bag for maximum heat retention. Additionally, placing the provided heavy teahouse blanket on top of your sleeping bag adds a final layer of insulation. This combination ensures a deep, cozy sleep regardless of the mountain temperature.

High-Altitude Dining and Nutrition

To maintain your energy for the trail, we offer an optional Full Board Meal Plan featuring three comprehensive daily dishes. Breakfast typically includes warm, energizing options like porridge, pancakes, eggs, and freshly baked Gurung bread. For lunch and dinner, you will enjoy diverse menus offering everything from popular international favorites to the legendary Dal Bhat. Furthermore, choosing Dal Bhat provides the best value and energy, as it comes with unlimited refills of lentil soup (Dal), rice, and vegetable curry (Tarkari). This optional plan also includes one hot drink per meal—specifically your choice of tea or coffee—to ensure you stay warm and hydrated throughout the day.

Expert Tip: To ensure optimal digestion at high elevations, we highly recommend prioritizing vegetarian options. Since ingredients are transported manually to these remote altitudes, fresh vegetarian dishes are the safest and most reliable choice for your well-being.

Hydration and Beverage Guidelines

Staying consistently hydrated is the most effective way to support your body during natural acclimatization. We strictly encourage using reusable water bottles to minimize plastic waste and reduce your personal costs. To support this, we provide high-quality water treatment tablets to ensure your drinking water is safe throughout the journey. This reliable system allows you to refill from local sources while promoting a sustainable mountain environment. Above all, our team prioritizes your health by ensuring you have constant access to safe, treated water.

Expert Tip: To ensure your body handles the high-altitude environment effectively, aim for 3 to 4 liters of total liquid intake daily. Specifically, you can reach this goal by complementing your water with mealtime tea or coffee. Furthermore, you may supplement your hydration with restorative teahouse options like ginger, lemon, and honey tea, which are excellent for soothing the throat in crisp mountain air. This consistent approach to fluid intake significantly supports your acclimatization and keeps you energized during the trek toward the sanctuary.

Essential Logistics & Planning

Booking Your Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek – 5 Days

To simplify your planning, you can secure your preferred dates with a fully transferable deposit of USD 100. While we provide the option to settle the remaining balance upon arrival in Kathmandu or Pokhara, most of our travelers find it more convenient to complete their full payment in advance. This proactive approach allows you to finalize all financial details early, ensuring a smoother transition once you arrive in Nepal. Notably, we accept secure online transfers, credit cards, and major global currencies to make the process as seamless as possible.

Flexible Booking Options and Transparent Pricing

To provide the most competitive rates, our primary package is designed as a Pokhara-to-Pokhara trek. This foundational service allows you to secure a high-quality Himalayan experience at a low base price while maintaining total control over your budget. Notably, our base price focuses on core logistics and does not include meals or porter services. However, you have the total flexibility to customize your journey by adding our Full Board Meal Plan or professional porter services as optional add-ons.

Flexible Flight Options: For those traveling from the capital, we offer seamless Kathmandu-to-Kathmandu (including Pokhara-Kathmandu flights) upgrades. This additional service includes your round-trip domestic flights and all necessary airport transfers. You may, however, begin your trip in Kathmandu and end in Pokhara, or choose specific Pokhara-Kathmandu flight connections to perfectly suit your travel plans.

Travel Insurance and Financial Protection

Navigating high-altitude trails requires both physical preparation and professional financial protection. Even though insurance is not mandatory for the Annapurna region, we highly recommend possessing a comprehensive Nepal trekking insurance policy. Notably, your coverage should ideally include emergency helicopter evacuation and medical expenses for altitudes up to 4,130 m. Furthermore, we advise selecting a plan that covers “Trip Interruption” to protect your investment against unforeseen changes. In summary, securing a reliable policy ensures total peace of mind throughout your Himalayan journey.

Expert Tip: Not all insurance policies cover high-altitude trekking in Nepal. Please ensure your provider specifically covers activities up to 5,000 m to be fully protected. Choosing the right policy remains the safest way to protect your health and your travel investment.

International Flight and Buffer Days

Regarding your international travel, we highly recommend booking your return flights with at least 1 to 2 buffer days at the end of your trip. Critically, this extra time helps align your schedule should any weather-related delays or road closures occur in the mountains. Because Himalayan weather can be unpredictable—impacting domestic flights from Pokhara or road travel to Kathmandu—having these buffer days ensures you do not miss your international connection. In summary, this small planning step provides peace of mind and protects your onward travel investment.

Expert Tip: We strongly advise purchasing travel insurance that covers “Trip Interruption” or “Trip Delay.” Specifically, this can help reimburse costs for unexpected hotel stays or alternative transportation if the weather closes in. This is especially important for trekking in Nepal, where domestic flight schedules are highly dependent on clear mountain visibility.

Preparation and Trail Readiness

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is a rewarding journey perfectly suited for those with a healthy, active lifestyle. If you enjoy regular walks, light jogging, or weekend activities, you are already well-prepared for this adventure. We have seen many first-time trekkers with a good baseline of fitness complete this route comfortably and without worry. Because the trail is well-maintained and our pace is steady, your natural energy and a positive mindset are your best assets.

Expert Tip: While a strict training regime is not necessary, the secret to a more comfortable experience lies in your “trail legs.” In the months before you arrive, simply staying consistent with your favorite activities—like swimming, cycling, or walking—will keep your stamina high. If you want an extra boost, try a few walks on local hills or use the stairs instead of the elevator. These small, easy adjustments ensure you arrive feeling refreshed and ready to enjoy the 4,130 m sanctuary views rather than focusing on the effort.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek – 5 Days Safety Guidelines

Navigating the high-altitude terrain of the Annapurna Sanctuary requires proper preparation and constant awareness. Specifically, following our comprehensive Himalayan trekking safety guidelines ensures a safer, more rewarding experience while allowing you to focus entirely on the breathtaking 360-degree mountain views.

Safety Tip from Cordial Trek: Always listen to your body and maintain a steady, consistent pace rather than rushing. Proper hydration—drinking at least 3 to 4 liters of water daily—is the most effective way to help your body naturally adjust to the mountain air.

Connectivity and Power on the Trail

Pokhara serves as your final hub for reliable internet and power before entering the Annapurna Sanctuary. We recommend completing any essential data tasks or personal calls in the city where high-speed connections are stable. Once you begin the 5-day trek, signal strength and power reliability often fluctuate due to the remote mountain terrain. While most teahouses provide Wi-Fi and device charging, these services are managed locally and are not always reliable. Specifically, many lodges depend on solar power or local micro-hydroelectricity, which can be affected by weather conditions or necessary maintenance.

Expert Tip: For a seamless experience, we suggest carrying a small amount of Nepalese Rupees (NPR) in cash to cover these daily comforts. On average, expect to pay approximately NPR 300-500 for device charging and Wi-Fi access. Because mountain power sources can be limited during cloudy weather, we highly recommend carrying a 20,000 mAh+ power bank. This ensures your camera and phone stay ready for the trek regardless of trail conditions.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Baggage Limits & Porter Support

For travelers flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara, the domestic flight baggage allowance is typically 25 kg total (20 kg for checked luggage and 5 kg for carry-on). If you are trekking independently, there is no specific weight limit for your gear. However, for those who prefer to trek lighter, we offer professional porter support as an additional service. To ensure the safety and well-being of our team, each porter is limited to a maximum weight of 25 kg. We are happy to facilitate porter sharing among any number of travelers—whether a group of two or ten—provided the total weight remains within this limit.

Packing for Success: If you book a porter, we provide a durable Cordial Trek duffle bag for your main gear. Furthermore, you will carry a personal daypack for daily essentials such as water, sun protection, and extra layers. Notably, we strictly recommend keeping your passport, cash, and valuables in your daypack at all times. You should never place these items in the checked duffle bag. Consequently, following these professional guidelines ensures a secure and organized journey toward the heart of the Annapurna massif.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek Packing Checklist

Meticulous preparation is essential for a successful journey into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. We recommend reviewing our complete Annapurna Base Camp packing checklist to ensure you carry the right gear for the region’s unique microclimates. This guide helps you balance comfort, safety, and weight—especially important for the steady ascent to 4,130 m. In addition, it prepares you for the rapid transition from lush bamboo forests to the high-alpine glacial basin. As a result, following this checklist ensures you are fully equipped for the changing weather and can focus entirely on the stunning 360-degree Himalayan scenery.

Personal Expenses and Tipping Guidelines

While your basic package provides the essential framework for your trek, please note that meals, drinks, and porter services are not included. Consequently, you may choose to budget for these daily costs based on your personal preferences. To begin with, if you plan to eat and drink at the local teahouses, daily meal expenses typically range from NPR 5,000 to 6,000. Furthermore, you might budget an additional NPR 1,500 to 2,500 per day for beverages, such as bottled water, tea, or coffee, depending on your needs. Additionally, it is a time-honored tradition to tip your professional guide as a thank you for their expertise. While entirely optional, you may plan USD 100 to 150 for your guide and USD 80 to 120 for your porter as a gratitude for their service and hard work.

Optional Comforts and Essentials: In addition to food and drink, personal extras such as hot showers (NPR 300–500), device charging and Wi-Fi (NPR 300–500) access are available for a small fee paid directly to the lodges. Because these costs are managed locally, carrying a modest amount of local currency ensures you can enjoy these amenities at your own discretion.

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek Support & Sustainability

Professional Support Team

A highly experienced, licensed trekking guide is fully included to provide expert navigation and safety as you head toward the Annapurna Sanctuary. Furthermore, porter support remains available as an optional service to enhance your mountain comfort, strictly adhering to a maximum weight limit of 25 kg per porter. As a result, you can enjoy a seamless mountain experience backed by the reliability of our dedicated team.

Responsible Trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary

At Cordial Trek, we are deeply committed to preserving the fragile mountain ecosystem of the Annapurna Conservation Area. F.A.Q

Is the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek suitable for beginners?

Yes, the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is exceptionally suitable for beginners with moderate physical fitness and a spirit of adventure. This trek follows a well-established trail through lush rhododendron forests and traditional villages, making it one of the most accessible ways to stand at the foot of an 8,000-meter peak. While the route features several stone staircases, the gradual ascent is designed to help you adapt comfortably to the altitude. Throughout the journey, our guides maintain a steady pace and prioritize your well-being, ensuring you can complete the trek confidently while enjoying the breathtaking sanctuary scenery.

Expert Tip: We recommend focusing on light cardiovascular training and leg strength in the months before your arrival to make the stone steps much easier to manage.

What happens if I cannot keep up with the group’s trekking pace?

Guest safety and comfort are our absolute priorities, and we ensure that no one is ever left behind. Our team is highly experienced in managing group dynamics based on your specific booking:

a. For groups with porters: If you prefer a more relaxed pace, you will be accompanied by our government-licensed porter-guides, who are fully qualified to lead and support you while the lead guide supervises the forward group.

b. For groups without porters: Your lead guide will manage the group's pace to ensure everyone stays within a safe and visual distance. If someone is significantly behind, the guide will prioritize the slower trekker’s safety and, if necessary, arrange an overnight stay at the nearest suitable guest house rather than pushing toward the original destination.

How do you manage Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and emergencies?

At Cordial Trek, your safety is the absolute cornerstone of our operations. Our licensed guides are expertly trained in high-altitude medicine and strictly adhere to our Triple-Safety Protocol:

a. Proactive Health Monitoring: Your guide conducts twice-daily health checks using a professional pulse oximeter to monitor your oxygen saturation and heart rate.

b. Specialized Medical Support: Our team carries comprehensive medical kits and portable oxygen can to ensure emergency support is available at every stage.

c. Decisive Response & Evacuation: Our guiding principle is that "descent is the best cure." Should symptoms persist, we coordinate an immediate descent. In critical situations, we provide 24/7 support to facilitate professional helicopter evacuations to Pokhara.

What are the specific travel insurance requirements for ABC Trek?

For the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, your insurance policy must be a specialist "Adventure" or "Mountaineering" plan. Standard travel insurance typically caps coverage at 2,500 m, which is insufficient for this trek. Your policy MUST explicitly include:

a. Altitude Coverage: Ensure your policy covers trekking up to 5,000 meters.

b. Emergency Helicopter Evacuation: Ensure your policy includes Search and Rescue (SAR) and supports Direct Billing. This prevents you from having to pay USD 2,500–3,000+ out of pocket in an emergency.

c. Trip Interruption: We strongly advise a clause to cover non-refundable costs if your itinerary is disrupted by mountain conditions or personal emergencies.

Is the water safe to drink on the trail?

Yes, when managed through our professional purification standards. To ensure your safety, we strongly advise against drinking untreated tap or stream water. Cordial Trek prioritizes your health and environmental conservation through:

a. Purification Tablets: Our guides use medically approved tablets to eliminate 99.9% of harmful bacteria and viruses. This ensures your water is safe and purified for reusable bottles throughout the trek.

b. Teahouse Options: You can purchase "Boiled Water" at mountain lodges (approx. NPR 200–500 per liter), which is ideal for cold mornings.

c. Sustainability: We recommend bringing a quality Thermos or insulated bottle to help us eliminate single-use plastics from the fragile Annapurna ecosystem.

Is there electricity and WiFi available?

Yes, though both are "premium services" in remote regions. Most tea houses offer lodge-specific WiFi and charging stations for a small fee.

a. Costs: WiFi typically costs NPR 300–500 (USD 3–4) per session. Charging devices costs approx. NPR 200–500 (USD 2–4) per charge.

b. Reliable Backup: We strongly recommend carrying a high-capacity power bank (20,000 mAh+).

Pro-Tip: The extreme cold drains batteries rapidly. Keep your phone and power bank inside your sleeping bag at night to keep them warm and ready for sunrise photos.

How much should I budget for personal expenses and tipping?

Your daily budget depends on your meal plan. We recommend withdrawing all necessary cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara, as there are no ATMs on the trail.

a. Without a meal plan: Budget USD 35–45 (NPR 5,000–6,000) per day for full meals.

b. With a meal plan: Budget USD 15–20 (NPR 2,000–2,500) per day for WiFi, hot showers, charging, and snacks.

c. Tipping (Gratitude): Tipping is a respected tradition. For the ABC trek, we suggest a combined total of USD 100–150 per trekker for the guide and porter team, usually presented on the final evening.

What is your policy on solo travelers?

We warmly welcome solo adventurers! Cordial Trek provides the perfect balance of community, safety, and privacy:

a. Solo Packages: We offer a dedicated Solo Traveler option with a single supplement that guarantees a private guide, porter and a private room in mountain guest houses (excluding Deurali and ABC).

b. Join a Group: You can join one of our fixed-departure groups to meet like-minded explorers in a supportive environment.

Note on High Altitude: At the highest points—specifically Deurali and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC)—lodge space is physically limited. In rare instances where a private room is unavailable, we ensure you are paired only with a traveler of the same gender from our group.

Is there secure luggage storage available during the trek?

Yes. We provide complimentary secure storage for your primary luggage throughout the duration of your trek. Your non-trekking belongings are monitored and protected until your return, allowing you to trek with a lighter load and total peace of mind.

a. Kathmandu: For treks starting here, you can store gear at our Kathmandu office.

b. Pokhara: For treks starting here, we provide secure storage at our Pokhara facility.

How are the guides' and porters' meals and lodging managed?

We believe in ethical trekking and the absolute well-being of our field team. While a licensed guide is always included as a core part of your package, porters are an optional service you can add. In either case, the service fees are fully inclusive of their lodging, meals, insurance, and professional high-altitude equipment. There are no additional costs to you for their welfare; Cordial Trek manages these responsibilities entirely to ensure our team is well-cared for, fairly compensated, and motivated to provide you with the best experience possible.
