The Dhampus-Australian Camp 2-Day Trek is one of the most popular short treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal, and for good reason. Whether you are new to trekking, traveling with limited time, or simply looking for a relaxing yet breathtaking Himalayan adventure, this trek offers the perfect introduction. Moreover, starting from Pokhara, this trek rewards travelers with stunning views of the Annapurna Massif, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and Hiunchuli. Along the way, you will meander through lush forests, vibrant terraced fields, and charming traditional villages. Consequently, this trek offers an ideal combination of nature, culture, and light adventure, all in just two days.

Most importantly, the Dhampus-Australian Camp 2-Day Trek allows you to experience the majesty of the Himalayas without long walking days or high-altitude challenges, making it suitable for almost every type of traveler.

Australian Camp (Thulo Kharka) – A Panoramic Paradise

The real name of Australian Camp is Thulo Kharka, which translates to “big pasture” in Nepali. Historically, this ridge served as a seasonal grazing ground for local herders from nearby villages. Later, in the late 1980s, Austrian hikers discovered this peaceful location and began camping here, drawn by the expansive mountain views and tranquil environment. Over time, due to pronunciation differences, the name gradually evolved from Austrian Camp to Australian Camp.

Today, Australian Camp is celebrated for its unparalleled panoramic Himalayan vistas, spectacular sunrise and sunset, and excellent bird-watching opportunities. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks glow magnificently against the sky, creating truly unforgettable moments. Additionally, the gentle ridge provides perfect spots to pause, soak in the scenery, and capture breathtaking photographs.

Dhampus Village – Culture, Scenery, and Serenity

Nestled approximately 25 kilometers north of Pokhara, Dhampus is a traditional Gurung village that enchants trekkers with its charm and authenticity. While it is often a stopover for trekkers heading to Ghorepani Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp, Dhampus itself is a destination worth exploring. Here, you can enjoy sweeping views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. Particularly during early mornings, the rising sun gradually illuminates the mountains in warm golden hues, creating a scene that feels almost magical.

Moreover, Dhampus offers a glimpse into Gurung culture and rural life. You may observe locals tending terraced fields, caring for livestock, or socializing in the village square. Surrounded by lush forests and fresh mountain air, Dhampus is a perfect place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and immerse yourself in authentic Nepali life.

Best Season for the Dhampus-Australian Camp 2-Day Trek

The best time to embark on this trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During spring, the weather is mild, the skies are mostly clear, and the rhododendron forests are in full bloom, making the landscape colorful and lively. In contrast, autumn offers stable weather, crisp air, and the clearest mountain views, especially after the monsoon season. Although trekking in winter is possible, mornings can be cold and sometimes foggy. On the other hand, the monsoon season brings lush greenery but may obscure views due to clouds and rain. Therefore, timing your trek in spring or autumn ensures the most scenic and comfortable experience.
