ABC Poon Hill Trek or better known as Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is yet another most pleasing and tempting 14 days trip available in Nepal. For those unaware, Annapurna I (8091 m) is the tenth highest mountain in the world above sea level. Moreover, the base camp falls inside Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin lying 40 km directly north of Pokhara. The package is thus tailored for all thrill seeking nomads with a hunger for more.
The tour usually begins with a pick up from Kathmandu Airport on the day of arrival. Travelers then go for a full day Kathmandu Day Tour the next day. It helps the visitor to get acquainted with the ambience and people of Nepal. The travelers then begin their day third with a scenic drive (optional: 30 minutes flight) from Kathmandu to Pokhara. The visitors here explore the beautiful city of Pokhara and stay at a hotel on the lakeside for the night halt. The trek actually begins from day four when the travelers take a one hour drive and arrive at Nayapul.
Ghorepani is a modern village in Myagdi District of north-central Nepal. The place used to be a rest stop where ancient traders found water (Paani in Nepali) for their horses (Ghoda in Nepali). It thus led to the nomenclature Ghorepani. It lies 17 kilometers from the district capital of Beni at an elevation of approximately 2850 m. However, the village lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP), requiring a national park permit to visit. It also contains a number of guest houses that provide lodging and fooding to travelers. Many trekkers spend the night here. They then trek to the top of nearby Poon Hill (3210 m) the next day to watch the sunrise.
Poon Hill is a hill station overlooking the Annapurna Massif range and Dhaulagiri mountain range in Gandaki Province of Nepal. The hill station provides a panoramic lookout for mountains including Annapurna I-IV, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri I (8127m), Dhaulagiri II, Machapuchare (6993 m), Himchuli, Nilgiri and Dhampus peak among others. Moreover, the Poon Hill viewpoint is on the way to Annapurna Sanctuary which lies in the center of Annapurna Conservation Area.
The Annapurna Sanctuary receives only 7 hours of sunlight a day at the height of summer. The unique combination of heights and depths inside the sanctuary thus gives an insight into an extraordinary variety of ecosystems. Furthermore, the south-facing slopes are covered in dense tropical jungles of rhododendron and bamboo. While the north-facing slopes, in the rain shadow, have a drier colder climate.
Nonetheless, the panoramic view of the sanctuary from the Annapurna Base Camp is breathtaking and never experienced like before. Due to the same, the number of trekkers to the Sanctuary has increased substantially. Additionally, it is because the Sanctuary forms the base of one of the major routes to the peaks of the Annapurna range. The Annapurna Sanctuary is now part of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). This therefore adds restrictions on the number of outside travelers, gathering of firewood, and domestic animal grazing.
Moreover, during your journey you will also be experiencing a diverse range of flora and fauna. Additionally the travelers will also be exploring the ethnic Gurung cultures and their hospitality while visiting the famous Ghandruk village.
Furthermore, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. This oval-shaped plateau sits at an altitude of over 4000 meters . It is surrounded by a ring of mountains, the Annapurna range, most of which are over 7000 meters. However, the only entrance here is a narrow valley between the peaks of Himchuli and Macchapucchre. The Sanctuary was thus not penetrated by outsiders until 1956.
The package adds the perk to explore the historical civilization of Kathmandu Valley. Here you will get an insight into UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Swayambhunath, the monkey temple, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Kathmandu Durbar Square that house living goddess Kumari.
