Furthermore, the Australian Camp Trek is a great way to experience the beauty of the Annapurna region without having to embark on a long and challenging trek. It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy stunning mountain views, experience Nepali culture, and get some exercise in a beautiful natural setting.
The real name of Australian Camp is actually Thulo Kharka, which translates to big pasture in Nepali. Originally, Thulo Kharka was a seasonal grazing area for herders from nearby villages. In the late 1980s, Austrian hikers frequented the area and started camping there, enjoying the peaceful and scenic location. Later, due to pronunciation difficulties for the locals, the name gradually transformed from Austrian Camp to Australian Camp. The place is mostly famous for a panoramic view of the Himalayas and bird watching. The travelers here can also experience the spectacular sunrise and sunset while in the region.
Dhampus is a traditional Gurung village nestled in the Annapurna region of Nepal and lies about 25 kilometers north of Pokhara. Moreover, it also serves as a popular stop for trekkers on their way to destinations like Ghorepani Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp. But it is also a wonderful destination in itself, especially for those seeking a taste of Nepali culture and breathtaking mountain views.
Additionally, Dhampus boasts panoramic views of the Annapurna Massif, including iconic peaks like Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Hiunchuli. Just imagine waking up to a sunrise painting these majestic mountains in golden hues!
Apart from the mountains, Dhampus also offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the Gurung people, the indigenous inhabitants of this region. You might see locals tending their terraced fields, working with their animals, or simply enjoying their daily routines. The village is surrounded by lush forests and fresh mountain air, it’s a place to relax, unwind, and connect with nature.

This short and easy trek completes within two days. The travelers begin their trip on day one with a short drive from Pokhara to Phedi. Here you will begin your trek towards Australian Camp via Dhampus and back to Pokhara from Kande. The travelers will spend a night at Australian Camp itself before making their way back the next day.
The trip actually begins with a pickup from your hotel in Pokhara. Your guide will meet and greet you at your hotel at 08:00 AM on the first day of our trip. The travelers will then take a short (30 minutes) drive from Pokhara towards Phedi. Phedi marks the start point of your trek. You will then hike for 5-6 hours towards Australian Camp via Dhampus. Additionally, you’ll have numerous photo opportunities along the way. The travelers will enjoy their lunch at Dhampus while dinner and breakfast are served at the Mountain Guest House at Australian Camp. Additionally, your guide will provide you with briefings about timing and stops before the trek begins on day one.
The travelers will be accommodated at a Mountain Guest House for their night halt. The guest house will be equipped with hot showers and private bathrooms. Although basic, these guest houses are clean and provide a comfortable place for a good night’s rest.
During the trek, you will be provided with one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner. You may thus choose from a menu offering local and international cuisines as per your consideration.
Note: It is highly advisable to stick to vegetarian food throughout your trek, as proper toilet facilities are not available everywhere along the trail.
Bottled water is available along the trail, but we encourage you to bring your own reusable water bottles and treat tap water to reduce single-use plastic bottle waste. Be sure to bring water treatment pills and flavorings to enhance the taste. Staying hydrated is essential, so aim to drink more than 4 liters of water per day while trekking.
Please keep in mind that you’re embarking on a trek and not exploring urban areas. While some facilities like charging and Wi-Fi are available, they are not guaranteed. We also recommend against planning to work or conduct online meetings during the trek, allowing you to fully enjoy the trekking experience.
You should have Nepali rupees for expenses such as tea, coffee, bottled drinks and Wi-Fi. Plan to carry about USD 30-40 equivalent Nepali rupees. Additionally, set aside USD 40-50 for tipping your guide and porter. The amount can vary based on the level of service provided by the field staff members.
Your porter is limited to carrying a maximum of 25 kgs for every two travelers. However if you are a solo traveler or want to pay extra for a private porter you may utilize the complete 25 kgs. Else, if you have items that you don’t need on the trek, you can leave them at your Pokhara hotel for storage at no extra cost. But remember to take a photo of your bag-tag and keep it for easy identification in case the original tag is lost.
As said earlier, every two travelers will be provided with a single porter and an experienced guide. Additionally, both guide and porter will be insured and well equipped with necessary items and first aid kit.
