The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of Nepal’s most complete and challenging trekking adventures. Over 18 days, it takes you deep into the Sagarmatha National Park, combining the Everest Base Camp route with three iconic high-altitude passes. Moreover, this journey offers unmatched Himalayan scenery, diverse landscapes, and an authentic cultural experience with the Sherpa people. Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp trek, this circuit pushes further. You will cross Kongma La Pass (5,535 m), Cho La Pass (5,420 m), and Renjo La Pass (5,360 m) to unlock spectacular panoramas of the world’s tallest mountains, making this trek a true test of endurance and spirit.
Your adventure starts with a thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,800 m), the gateway to the Khumbu region. From Lukla, the trail winds through Sherpa villages and crosses the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge over the Dudh Koshi River. Soon, you arrive at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), the bustling hub of the Khumbu. Namche is not only a trading center but also an important acclimatization stop. Here, you can enjoy views of Everest, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku while adjusting to higher altitudes.
From Namche, the trail leads higher through Tengboche and Dingboche. The first great challenge of the trek is Kongma La Pass (5,535 m). It is the toughest of the three passes, offering sweeping views of Makalu and the Khumbu Glacier. The route then descends toward Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), where climbers from around the world gather each season. A sunrise hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) gives you the most iconic view of Everest, bathed in golden light.
Next comes the second pass, Cho La (5,420 m). This dramatic crossing often requires walking across a glacier, adding an element of adventure. The descent brings you into the pristine Gokyo Valley, home to the famous Gokyo Lakes. These six turquoise lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. From the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), trekkers enjoy breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the vast Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in Nepal.
The last pass, Renjo La (5,360 m), rewards trekkers with some of the most stunning Himalayan vistas. From its summit, you can see four 8,000-meter peaks—Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu—standing tall above countless smaller mountains. Furthermore, the descent from Renjo La brings you to Thame, a quiet Sherpa village with historic monasteries. Finally, the route circles back to Lukla, completing this extraordinary circuit.
a. Spring (March–May): Mild weather, clear skies, and blooming rhododendrons make this one of the best times.
b. Autumn (September–November): The most popular season with stable weather, warm days, and excellent mountain visibility.
c. Winter (December–February): Less crowded, but very cold. Proper gear and preparation are essential.
d. Summer (June–August): Monsoon rains make trails slippery and cloud the views, so it is the least recommended season.
This 18-Day trek is ideal for adventurers seeking more than just Everest Base Camp. Besides, it combines high passes, sacred lakes, cultural immersion, and unparalleled Himalayan views. While challenging, it remains accessible to fit trekkers with proper acclimatization and determination. With its perfect mix of adventure, scenery, and culture, the Everest Three Passes Trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Nepal’s Himalayas.
